The Philippine National Red Cross Negros Occidental-Bacolod City chapter is celebrating
July as Blood Donor's Month on the theme "Safe Blood for Safe Motherhood," a press
release from the group said. The theme aims to highlight
the vital role that blood donors play in saving the lives of thousands of mothers
and their newborn, the press release said. Studies show that each year more than
500,000 women die needlessly during pregnancy or childbirth due to severe bleeding,
and this contributes to up to 44 percent of maternal deaths.
The PNRC has lined up activities for this month, which include a series of mass
blood-letting all over Negros Occidental, in coordination with Provincial Health
Office and other local health offices, the press release said.
The celebration is also aimed at raising public awareness on the need for safe
blood and the importance of regular blood donation, the press release added.*
