Arming of tanods studied

The proposal to arm barangay tanods is being revived in Western Visayas and Region 6 police director Wilfredo Dulay said it is now being studied.

However, the proposal has already met strong resistance from the local government officials in Iloilo, who said it will further aggravate the peace an order situation. With proper training, monitoring and close supervision by regular policemen, Dulay said barangay tanods will boost the visibility operations of the police in identified crime-prone areas of Western Visayas.

The Police Regional Office 6 is considering arming barangay tanods with shotguns.

Police records show that there are 7,000 policemen securing an estimated 4 million residents of Western Visayas.

Dulay said the ideal ratio is one policeman for every 500 persons. What we have in the region is one policeman per 1,000 people, he added.*GPB
