Jail escapee surrenders
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

A jail escapee gave himself up to the Cadiz City Police Station Saturday, almost two weeks after he and two other inmates bolted from the Bago City Police Station jail.

Supt. Arnel Arpon, Cadiz police chief, yesterday said Michael Victor Vergara, 18, surrendered to them, after the police assured him of his safety.

Arpon said Vergara expressed fears that something bad may happen to him, if he continues to hide from the authorities.

He also said Vergara admitted his involvement in the hold-up of a salesgirl of IC Trading in Cadiz City on March 21, whom he and his companion divested of P25,000 in cash.

Investigations of the Cadiz police also showed that Vergara confessed that he was given only P5,000 by his companion, whose identity is being withheld by the police, as his share of the loot.

Vergara and two other inmates identified as Aris Chicuva and Ryan de la Torre, bolted from Bago City Police Station jail on March 19, by sawing off the iron window grills of their detention cell, three days after their arrest on March 16.

The three had been intercepted and nabbed by patrolling troopers of the NOPPO Public Safety Company, for having three homemade shotguns, a bladed weapon, and suspected dried marijuana leaves in Bago City, police records show.

Vergara and Chicuva, who has three pending arrest warrants for murder, three more for attempted murder, and another for frustrated murder, were almost arrested last week in Brgy. Bug-ang, Toboso, when their hideout was raided by the police.

However, Arpon said, Chicuva and Vergara managed to escape, and separated from each other.

Due to intensified manhunt operations, Arpon said Vergara returned to his residence in Cadiz City, and expressed his intention to surrender to his mother, who contacted a member of the Cadiz City Police Station.

The escape of the three prisoners led to the relief of Inspector Jerry Nacion as deputy police chief of Bago, and SPO2 Jerry Abijito, guard-on-duty. They are now assigned at Camp Alfredo Montelibano Sr. in Bacolod City, while investigation on the jailbreak is ongoing.*GPB
