Waste segregation trial
period starts today

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The 15-day trial period for the implementation of the “No Segregation, No Collection” policy of the Bacolod City government involving the collection of garbage starts today, Councilor and Liga ng mga Barangay president Mona Dia Jardin, said yesterday.

Jardin, who attended the 5thRegional Solid Waste Management summit in Iloilo City last week, said this is in compliance with Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 that requires Local Government Units in the country to have their own sanitary landfill to manage properly the garbage being generated everyday in their locality.

Garbage segregation is needed so the city can fully utilize its sanitary landfill, she said, and added that she is also urging all the barangays to help ensure the implementation of waste segregation in their areas

Jardin said biodegradable wastes will be collected by the Department of Public Services personnel every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Non-biodegradable wastes will be collected every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, while special wastes will be collected on Sunday.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is strictly implementing the R.A. 9003, and it has already issued a notice that it will change LGU’s who have not complied with it, she said.

“The good news is that Bacolod is not included among those LGU’s issued notices since Bacolod already has a sanitary landfill that is ready to operate when waste segregation is already in place,” Jardin said.

A synchronized barangay assembly was held yesterday to inform the public of the scheduled implementation of the “No Collection, No Segregation” policy of the city. The Department of Interior and Local Government requested that a barangay assembly should be held twice a year, she added.

Bacolod City, with a population of about 550,000 people, generates 220 tons of garbage everyday and if the people will not help in waste segregation, the city will be penalized under R.A. 9003 and the P30 million sanitary landfill will not be utilized properly, she added.*CGS.
