Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday urged Negros Occidental athletes to give their best and help Western Visayas delegates win the overall championship in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa set in Lingayen, Pangasinan next month.

Marañon, who turned over cash incentives at the Capitol yesterday to those who won gold, silver, and bronze medals for the province during the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet, urged the athletes to strive harder and set their mind towards the goal of conquering the Palarong Pambansa title.

The governor said he will double the amount of incentive for athletes who will win the gold in the national Palaro.

The provincial government turned over a total amount of P745,000 to regional meet medalists, who represented Negros Occidental.

Each gold medalist received P1,150, silver medalist, P800 each, and the bronze medalist, P600.

In the elementary division, there were 188 gold medalists, 75 silver, and 41 bronze; while the secondary group had 260 gold medalists, 112 silver, and 44 bronze.

With Western Visayas always finishing first runner-up to the National Capital Region in the annual school-based national games, Marañon said the time has come for Region VI to prevail over NCR.

“This time, with your enthusiasm, skills, effort, and with God’s will, we will able to capture the elusive overall Palaro championship,” Marañon said, adding that it will give Negros Occidental more reason to strengthen its bid for the hosting of the national games next year.

He also told the athletes to practice more, obey their coaches and listen to their instructors as these are the key factors in winning their respective events.*NAB
