Construction of
50 houses in 5 days on

The Gawad Kalinga Bayani challenge, that targets the building of 50 houses for the homeless in Amlan, Negros Oriental, in five days, starts today.

About 150 teams of summer volunteer-builders are expected to finish the construction on April 14, in the three-hectare lot offered by the local government in barangay Tambujangin, for the victims of tropical storm “Sendong”.

Amlan Mayor Bentham dela Cruz, however said the lot can accommodate more than 120 houses. Residents living near the riverbanks and beachfronts are the priority beneficiaries, he added.

Crackdown vs unregistered
water vessels ordered

Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Transportation and Communications ordered yesterday the Maritime Industry Authority and the Philippine Coast Guard to ensure that the policy that bans unregistered or colorum motorized bancas for travel, island-hopping, or sightseeing purposes, is strictly enforced.

This was after an unregistered motorized banca capsized at Lake Mainit, near the province of Agusan del Norte, that resulted in one death recently.

The fatality was identified by police authorities and the PCG as Melocina Mahilom, and the two missing as Anthony Cebrian and Cris Anthony Alipoos, all from the province of Cebu. Twenty-one passengers have been rescued.

DTI to promote FTAs in Neg.Or

The Department of Trade and Industry in Negros Oriental will spearhead an information campaign April 18 on the new free trade agreements benefitting the food industry.

Dubbed “Doing Business in Free Trade Areas”, the campaign will be launched together with the Trade Commission, and in partnership with the Silliman University Nutrition and Dietetics Department.

Discussions will center on food-related opportunities, like markets and products with zero or reduced tariffs, and will give a larger picture of the impact of the FTAs on local trade and commerce.
