After dominating the Mambukal Team Relay competition, Escalante City athletes went on to win gold medals in discus throw and Under 17 boys’ 800-meter run as the athletics competition in the 19th Panaad sa Negros Festival started yesterday at the Panaad Park and Stadium.

Cedie Cabungcag beat closest contender Carlo Riva of Bacolod City Team A in discus throw with his 25.65m distance to given Escalante its first gold in the competition.

Riva’s 25.59 was good for the silver medal, while Revy Lambaste of Bago hurled the iron disc to a distance of 23.13 meters to grab the bronze.

Another gold medalist for Escalante yesterday was Jonie Mayongue, who finished the 800-meter run in 2 minutes and 10.43 seconds, while Bago City’s Fernando Montalbo clocked 2:11.39 to settle for silver, and Bacoleño Marvin Santihan finished third with his time of 2:12.75.

Also registering two gold medals in the three-day sports festival was the local government of Calatrava courtesy of John Boy Purisima and Apple Mae Adlawan in boys and girls’ Under 13 discus throw.

Purisima topped his event with his distance of 23.74 meters, while Adlawan bested other entries in the distaff side with her 24.81-meter mark.

Placing behind Purisima was Victorias City’s Elvin Suarez with his 22.20m distance, while Johnedel Craste of Murcia placed third.

It was a 1-2 finish for Calatrava in the girls’ Under 13 discus throw as Adlawan secured the gold and teammate Deanne Yanion (24.22m) the silver. Murcia’s Yvielista Ana placed third with her 20.76m throw.

Also posting an impressive opening day performance were the young runners from Murcia as John Lloyd Sustento and John Rey Limco booked the gold and silver in Under 13 boys’ 800 meters, leaving behind Bago City’s Carlos Gabriel to pick up the bronze.

Sustento finished the race in 2:40.52, while Limco clocked 2:41.63, and Castro, 2:49.87.

In the girls’ 800 meters, Geraldine Hulleza of Cadiz City won the gold, Jelca Villarte of Bago City, silver, and Wilmay Jane Valencia of Bacolod City, bronze.

Victorias City earned a gold in yesterday’s competition country of Angie Sumaria in Under 17 girls’ 800 meters, with Escalante’s Jay Mae Lorega taking home the silver, and Bacolod’s Cristy Aguilar, the bronze.

Athletic events continue today with the 3K and the 5K road race set tomorrow at 6 a.m.*NAB
