Fire hit four houses in Brgy. 31, Bacolod City, at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday and destroyed P600,000 worth of in properties, the City’s Bureau of Fire Protection reported yesterday.
Insp. Publio Ploteña, Bacolod City deputy fire marshal, said a concerned citizen informed them that several houses in a compound at the junction of Lopez Jaena and Poinsettia streets were on fire.
Ploteña said four fire trucks from the BFP were dispatched to the area and were assisted by those of the Amity and Chamber fire volunteer brigades. The fire that reached second alarm status was put out at about 3:45 a.m. and no one was reported hurt, he said.
Investigation showed that the fire originated in one of the rooms at the heritage house of the Alquizar family occupied by Camilo Alquizar, and spread to the houses of Luisito, Joaquin and Romino, all surnamed Alquizar.
Ploteña said an unattended lighted candle in one of the rooms at the heritage house, which did not have electricity since last year, caused the fire. The fire easily spread because the houses were made of light materials, while the heritage house was already old, he added.
Fire also hit a room in a boarding house in Brgy. 18, Bacolod, Saturday but it did not spread as the occupants were able to put it out immediately, BFP reported.
Last week, two houses were also razed to the ground when fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, hit a residential area in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod.
Ploteña is reminding the public not to leave lighted candles or kerosene lamps unattended and to have their electrical connections checked by license electricians to avoid fire incidents.*APN back
