The Leonardo Panaligan Command of the New People's Army yesterday claimed responsibility for the death of a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental, whom they had linked to the killing of an activist and the molestation of a minor.
Ka JB Regalado, spokesperson of the Leonardo Panaligan Command, claimed in a statement they issued, that CAFGU member Danny Quilanan was linked to the killing of Dodong Quirante, a member of Karapatan-Negros and leader of a farmer's group in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, and the alleged molestation of a minor in Moises Padilla.
Quilanan, who also works as a part-time “habal-habal” driver, aside from rendering duties as a CAFGU member assigned at the Montilla detachment, was gunned down by about five suspected rebel assassins on April 10 in Sitio Tubod, Brgy. Montilla, Moises Padilla.
The unarmed victim succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
Capt. Anacito Naz, 302nd Infantry Brigade spokesman, however, said Quilanan was falsely accused of being among those who killed Quirante.
Investigations of the Commission on Human Rights showed that the alleged witness in the killing of Quirante failed to identify him as the perpetrator.
Military records also show that ex-CAFGU member Edwin Flores and John Estoquia, a civilian were summarily executed by suspected NPA rebels in previous months in Brgys. Quinten Remo and Montilla, all in Moises Padilla town.
The 302nd Infantry Brigade led by Col. Francisco Patrimonio strongly condemned the killing of another innocent victim of NPA brutality and injustice.*GPB
