A Philippine Army soldier died on the spot after the motorcycle he was driving rammed into a truck carrying sugarcane, in Bais City, Negros Oriental, at about 4:45 a.m. yesterday.
Chief Insp. Reynaldo Lichido, Bais police chief, identified the fatality as Staff Sgt. Ricky Alvior, who was assigned to the Alpha Company of the 12th Infantry Battalion, based at the 302nd Infantry Brigade headquarters, in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.
Police investigation showed that Alvior was bound for Bais City from the brigade headquarters, and was following the Isuzu cargo truck, owned and driven by Nelson Gutib, 42, of Amlan, Negros Oriental, at the national highway.
Upon reaching the vicinity of the Central Azucarera de Bais sugar mill, the truck maneuvered to enter the gates, just as Alvior was passing from behind, Lichido said.
Half of the body of Alvior slid under the truck during the crash, and he died on the spot. He was wearing a helmet.
The victim's wife, Imelda, has agreed to an amicable settlement with Gutib, after a meeting at the City Prosecutor's Office in Bais City, Lichido added.*JFP
