Poll gun ban to start in
5th district tomorrow
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The enforcement of the Comelec gun ban in four towns and a city in Negros Occidental will start tomorrow, together with the election period for the June 2 special election for the 5th district congressional seat that starts on the same day.

The 5th district covers Himamaylan City, Isabela, Moises Padilla, La Castellana and Hinigaran, with a voting population of more than 200,000.

Provincial Comelec Supervisor Jessie Suarez said he will discuss with top police and military officials of Negros Occidental, the security arrangements for the special elections.

The gun ban in the 5th district will end June 17.

Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, yesterday said that they are still awaiting guidelines and the calendar of activities from the Comelec for the special election in the 5th district.

Guisihan, however, said they are ready to enforce the Comelec gun ban.

He does not expect problem areas in the district, nothing that the prospective candidates are even relatives, Guisihan said.

Binalbagan Mayor Alejandro Mirasol and his nephew, Board Member Emilio Yulo III, initially appear to be heading for a showdown for the congressional seat vacated with the death of Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo.

Mirasol was endorsed by the United Negros Alliance as its official candidate, with the support of four of the five mayors in the district.

The filing of certificates of candidacy for the June 2 special election is slated on May 13 to 14, while the campaign period will start on May 17 and end on May 31. * GPB
