My daughter is
destroying her future

Dear Tita,

I am a 61-year-old widow with hypertension and diabetes. Fortunately, my late husband left me well-provided for so I don't have difficulty in making ends meet.

My problem is about my only child, Myrna, who didn't finish her college course because she eloped with her boyfriend when she was 18 years old as she was pregnant with his child. I was shocked when I found what she had done, but I couldn't abandon her at the time when she needed me most. I agreed to let her and her boyfriend Leo stay with me. This began my purgatory as they were so immature and unprepared for married life. They fought day and night and I couldn't sleep when they were fighting.

When Myrna gave birth to their son, I took care of all the expenses as they were both jobless. Leo's parents refused to help him as they had six kids of their own to care for. After giving birth, Myrna reverted to her old self, going out with her friends while I cared for their baby boy. This made Leo angry and they would fight all the time. When their son was only six month old, Leo left and we never heard from him again.

After a few months, Myrna went to Manila to look for a job. I didn't hear from her for almost a year, until one day she showed up pregnant and alone. She said she was working as a promo girl until she met a guy who seemed serious with her. She trusted him and believed he would marry her. But when she got pregnant, the guy told her he was married and left. Again, I had to take her in until she gave birth to her baby girl.

I thought Myrna learned her lesson, but now that her baby girl is almost a year old, Myrna is going out with an older man, who looks old enough to be her father. I warned her about this new man in her life, but she insists that he has money and has promised to help her financially. So far, I have not seen any of the money she bragged about. I am still spending for all her expenses and the care of her two kids. I am so worried that Myrna might get pregnant again and the same thing will happen.

What should I do? My money is almost gone. I can't abandon her as she has no one else to turn to.

SUFFERING MOTHER

Dear Suffering Mother,

It's time you put your foot down. Be firm. You have to insist that Myrna finds a job to support herself and her kids. Tell her frankly that your money is almost gone and you need money for your own medical needs. She has taken advantage of you all these years. Stop being a pushover or you'll all end up homeless and broke. It is very inconsiderate of her to let you take care of her kids while she goes gallivanting around.

Don't allow it. This has got to stop.

TITA
