DSWD to LGUs
P92-M shelter funds
available for Neg.Or.

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 7 said that P92 million in housing funds is available for distribution to local government units in Negros Oriental that were badly hit by tropical storm “Sendong”.

Director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre, of the DSWD, however, said none of the affected LGUs was able to comply with the requirements in the release of fund, especially on the availability of a lot where the core shelter houses are to be constructed as local government counterpart.

“Sendong” destroyed 4,218 houses and damaged another 3,268, in Dumaguete City and the towns of Sibulan, Bacong, Amlan and Pamplona, in Negros Oriental.

Macapoble said the P92 million was set aside for Negros Oriental alone since last December 28. But the DSWD can not release the money unless concerned LGUs are able to purchase lots where the housing units will be constructed.

Aside from Negros Oriental, the storm also affected the provinces of Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor.

The DSWD earlier released a core shelter assistance of P4.5 million for Negrenses victimized by the floods way back in 2009, but was only implemented this year after the lot has been made available.

The construction of the 60 housing units is in full swing, near the Habitat 4 housing project in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete, and will be completed in June.*JG
