available for Neg.Or.

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 7 said that P92 million in housing funds is available for distribution to local government units in Negros Oriental that were badly hit by tropical storm “Sendong”.

Director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre, of the DSWD, however, said none of the affected LGUs was able to comply with the requirements in the release of fund, especially on the availability of a lot where the core shelter houses are to be constructed as local government counterpart.

“Sendong” destroyed 4,218 houses and damaged another 3,268, in Dumaguete City and the towns of Sibulan, Bacong, Amlan and Pamplona, in Negros Oriental.

The provincial government of Negros Oriental will hire additional doctors, who will be assigned to the district hospitals and six community primary hospitals in the province.

Gov. Roel Degamo said there is a need to increase the number of doctors to attend to patients, especially those coming from far-flung sitios and barangays. He added that he is waiting for the approval of the budget, that will be the basis to determine how many will be hired.

The strengthening and efficient delivery of health services to Negrenses is a priority program of the province, Degamo, said, and that by improving the services of the district and community hospitals, the influx of patients to the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital will be minimized..

Solon seeks postponement
of barangay elections

Rep. Jerry Treñas (Lone District of Iloilo City), who chairs the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, yesterday reiterated his call for a swift action to postpone the 2013 barangay elections, a press release from his office said.

Treñas said that with the ongoing impeachment trial against Chief Justice Renato Corona and the looming 2013 national elections, Congress has a very limited window of opportunity to give full attention to fast-tracking the passage of a measure, that would move the barangay polls to a more suitable schedule.
