133 students
given scholarships

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. signed a scholarship agreement between the provincial government and the 133 scholarship grantees at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center in Bacolod City, yesterday, a press release from the Capitol said.

There are five categories in the Negros Occidental Scholarship Program - the district educational scholarship for children of low-income families; “pagkaon” grants for children of farmers, fisher folks, and sugar workers; the provincial educational assistance for children of Capitol employees with salary grade 15 and below; vocational technical, and the indigenous people’s scholarships.

In the PEACE category, five employees were granted masters’ degree scholarship and three workers, for doctorate degrees, the press release said.

Marañon advised the grantees to take advantage of the scholarship opportunity, so they can help their families in the future. He added that quality education is a priority thrust of the provincial government, as he believes in the ability of every Filipino to excel, the press release also said.

The scholars, who graduated with honors recently, were also recognized and were given certificates, medals and cash incentives in the activity that was attended by Sangguniang Panlalawigan Board Member Pedro Zayco, who chairs the SP Committee on Education, the press release added.*

Circulo de Bacolod names
Gawad Bayani awardees

The Circulo de Bacolod has commended the five public school students in the city, as its Gawad Bayani awardees for 2012, a press release from the organization said.

They are Mariella Mabaquiao of the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School I; Allwen Jean Bianca Deligero, Andres Bonifacio Elementary School 2; Jobern Pongyan, A. Mabini Elementary School; Jessa Pajarconi, G. Lopez Jaena Elementary School; and Chian Jhel Tayupon of the Rizal Elementary School, the press release also said.

The Gawad Bayani is a yearly project of the Circulo that recognizes students who manifest the character of a true leader, the press release added.*

USLS grad 6th in
eng’g board exams

A La Salle graduate placed sixth in the April 2012 Electronics Engineer licensure examination, administered by the Professional Regulation Commission, a press release from the school said.

Alexis Alvin Undar was rated 92.60 percent and 47 others also passed the examination given in the cities of Manila and Cebu.

The University of St. La Salle garnered a passing rate of 69.57 percent, higher than the 53.55 national passing rate, and surpassing its 37.5 percent record in the October 2011 exams, when two of its graduates, John Ray Villaceran and Joseph Rivera, placed fifth and seventh, respectively, the press release added.*
