Taiwanese teacher-farmer
pushing for organic farming

Practical organic agriculture teaches farmers to produce the right and healthy food to eat while keeping the environment safe and clean, Prof. Yi-Sung Chen of Ming Dao University in Taiwan said during his talk on organic agriculture at the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel, in Bacolod City recently.

Chen was in the city as a guest of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturists during its Farmers and Fisherfolks' Congress 2012.

Chen said Taiwan has been producing organic products and is very keen about their practices not to use commercial fertilizers and herbicides. He also said it is good to reap healthy products without damaging the environment.

“We want to help farmers to produce good food for the people to prevent diseases since many people now eat contaminated chemical food that resulted to different kinds of diseases,” Chen said.

This is the reason why Taiwan is promoting organic agriculture because having a good organic farms helps in producing green and healthy food for the people, he also said.

Chen also lauded Gov. Alfredo Maranon, Jr. for his programs of promoting green agriculture to local farmers of Negros Occidental, saying, “I myself would like to see him and talk about organic agriculture.”

He added that sustainable organic agriculture of Negros Occidental and practical organic agriculture of Taiwan do not differ in practice because both do not use chemicals and medicines to enhance the growth of the plants.

Chen also encouraged Negrese farmers to pay more attention to organic agriculture and learn how to handle the organic farming practices so that they will know what to reap in the future.

Chen runs his own cherry tomato farm in Taiwan and he has visited different countries in Asia in his quest for practical organic agriculture. *LTG
