City sanitary landfill
blessing today: Bing

Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary for Operations Ernesto Adobo Jr. will be the guest of honor at the turnover ceremony and blessing of the sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa, Bacolod City, today.

DENR Undersecretary Demetrio Ignacio and Environment Management Bureau Region 6 Director Jonathan Bulos will also be special guests of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, and Sangguniang Panlungsod members during the ceremonies, a press release from City Hall said.

Also present will be the barangay captains, members of both the Solid Waste Management Board and Solid Waster Technical Working Group, and city department heads.

Leonardia said “We are happy that the DENR is giving us that much attention. I think we deserve this, being among the first 5 percent to comply with the sanitary landfill requirement in the whole country, out of about 1,500 local governments units.”

Earlier, Ignacio had lauded Leonardia and his administration for bringing Bacolod City into the elite group of 5 percent of local government units that have been able to comply with the sanitary landfill requirement of the solid waste management law of the country, it said.

Leonardia, Sayson and their allies in the SP had fought hard to bring the City Sanitary Landfill to reality, because their political opponents did everything they could to derail the project, the press release said.

Those opposing that project filed several complaints and cases against Leonardia, Sayson and those who supported the sanitary landfill, in Congress, the Ombudsman and EMB in Region 6, the press release said.

However, those working for it persevered and Bacolod City now has a Sanitary Landfill that has earned it accolades from top DENR and EMB officials, the press release added.*
