Jail guard arrested
for death of inmate

A jail guard at the Bureau of Jail Management in La Castellana town, Negros Occidental, who shot and killed an inmate, who attempted to hack him at about 10:45 a.m. yesterday, is now in police custody.

Senior Inspector Allan Reloj, La Castellana police chief, identified the victim as Alberto Cordova, 30, of Brgy. Manghanoy.

Cordova sustained gunshot wounds in his stomach and in his lower jaw with bullet exiting through his head. He was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Investigation showed that Cordova, who was facing murder charges, had just had a haircut and asked permission to clean up at the jail’s kitchen, where he took a bolo.

Minutes later, Cordova came out, headed for the administrative office, and hacked Jail Officer 2 Fernando Tamon, who was cleaning his firearm at that time, hitting his left hand, Reloj said.

A negotiation between Tamon and the family of Cordova, through Jail Insp. Jose Maria Algara is ongoing but if it fails, the jail guard will face criminal charges for homicide, Reloj also said.

Reloj told the DAILY STAR that Cordova’s medical record signed by his doctor Charibel Escandelor shows that he has been suffering from psychosis, a mental illness, since 2008.*APN

Bacolod cops seize
334 motorcycles

The Bacolod City Police Office has confiscated 334 motorcycles whose drivers failed to present their documents, in line with the “Oplan Katawhayan sa Dalan” (Order on the Road)” campaign, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, city police director, said yesterday.

De la Paz said 714 clean stickers were issued to motorcycle drivers, while 603 were apprehended for driving without helmets.

Seventy-four drivers, meanwhile, were nabbed because they had passengers below 7-years-old, which is prohibited under the law, police records show.

De la Paz said the number of motorcycle drivers caught with passengers below 7-years-old is alarming. He noted that some accidents in the past, involved minors who were seriously injured, or died.

“Katawhayan sa Dalan” also aims to curb incidents involving criminals riding in tandem in motorcycles.

De la Paz said he believes they have been gaining ground in the reduction of motorcycle-related crimes since the campaign started.

Through it, personnel of the LTO, HPG, BTAO and the Bacolod City Police Traffic Management Unit, conduct sustained checkpoint operations at the main thoroughfares of the city 24 hours a day, he added.*APN

Skeletal remains
found near flyover

Human skeletal remains was recovered in a sugarcane plantation near the flyover area in Brgy. Banago, Bacolod City at about 7:30 a.m. yesterday.

Kevin Estocaning, 15, said he was cutting sugarcane, when he saw the remains and immediately reported it to the police.

A red T-shirt, a green pedal pants and a pair of slipper were recovered with the skeletons and are now in police custody.

No identification cards were seen at the site, Station 3 chief, Senior Insp. Jose Mulleta, said.

No one from the nearby barangays has reported missing relatives but residents near the plantation said foul odor had been emanating from the area since November last year, Mulleta said.

He said they will request forensic experts to determine whether the skeletal remains were that of a man or a woman and to determine the cause of his or her death.

The remains were taken to the Bacolod City Public Cemetery at Burgos Street.*APN
