A resolution declaring May 7-13, 2012 as Surgeons Week in Bacolod City, was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod, in its session yesterday.

MOA on affordable cervical
cancer vaccine signed

The Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and GlaxoSmithKline signed a memorandum of agreement on Clinical Practice Guidelines-Immunization for Women that aims to provide affordable cervical cancer vaccine to women at L'Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City Tuesday.

The signing was witnessed by Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, and is one of the highlights of the POGS midyear convention that started Tuesday and ends today.

Dr. Rey De los Reyes, POGS president, said the immunization program with GSK covers all immunization projects and closest to his heart is the immunization against cervical cancer.

“My specialty is in gynecologic oncology so I deal with cancer on the reproductive tract of women and I am happy to tell you that we already have a vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancer through vaccination against human papillomavirus and this is also included in the immunization program for women,” de los Reyes said.

Marañon said the province, in partnership with POGS-Negros Chapter, is fortunate to host the event that aims to promote women's health issues and welfare to celebrate the smiling Pinay.

The promotion of health and well-being of Negrenses especially women and children has been foremost of his priorities, he said, adding that it continues to be in the Negros First priority agenda for development.

The governor also reported that Negros Occidental is the only province and the only local government unit in the country to have the comprehensive health insurance program, aside from PhilHealth that offers free services in accredited hospitals that benefited 120,000 and has served more than 10,000 patients.

Marañon said he hopes that the convention will be a successful arena for all health professionals to come out with new and innovative ideas on how to further advance women's health and welfare.

BACOLOD WANTS THIS PROBLEM

Meanwhile, Leonardia told the visitors that the only problem he wants to have in Bacolod City is the overflow of hotel guests and tourists.

“If I may express my personal observation, I was looking around and I saw this big crowd, and I was thinking about the cash registers of the hotels and restaurants in Bacolod because you don't just look like you are doctors but you look like big time spenders,” Leonardia said.

He also urged the doctors who are holding their convention to tour the city and “burn and throw” their money around, because Bacolod is always ready to host big conventions like this.

Leonardia added that the city likes to have people come as its hotels and business establishments are growing and are ready to help all visitors to experience the ambiance and climate conducive enjoyment and relaxation.*LTG
