Dizon succumbs
to colon cancer
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Bro.   Rolando Ramos Dizon, 67, succumbed to an almost 10-year battle with colon cancer at the D e La Salle Health Sciences Institute   in Dasmarines, Cavite, surrounded by family and friends at 7:09 last night , his brother-in-law, former Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella said.

Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra said “I believe he died as a good and faithful Christian Brother true to his sacred vows and commitments in life.”

“May he now intercede for us before the throne of our Heavenly Father. As I offer mass for his blessed soul, I also pray for his bereaved family that the Good Lord will console them in their hour of bereavement. May his soul rest in peace,” the bishop said.

Dizon, who was from Bacolod City, was the son of the late Raymundo Dizon and Hermilinda Ramos.

He was chairman of the Commission on Higher Education from 2003-2004, member of the Consultative Commission on Charter Change in 2005, and p resident of De La Salle University-Manila and the De La Salle University System (1998–2003).

He was also president of the University of St. La Salle and Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association in Bacolod, co-founder of the National Movement for Free Elections and had served as president of the medical institution he died in, Puentevella said.

Dizon finished his primary and secondary education at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City, obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from the Catholic University of America, took up his  Master of Arts degree  in Education Administration at   De La Salle University Manila  and his  Doctorate degree  in International Development Education at the  Stanford University School of Education .

He was a Ten Outstanding Young Men Awardee and in 2006, Dizon was given the Distinguished Lasallian Award by the De La Salle Alumni Association in De La Salle University-Manila.

Puentevella said Dizon was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2003 and underwent surgery in Houston Texas. He also underwent further surgery to arrest the cancer last month, he added.

Puentevella said Dizon had been declared brain dead since Tuesday night.

“We thank everybody who have been praying with us for Bro Rolly,” he said.

“You could never find a brother-in-law as perfect as Bro. Rolly anywhere on earth, I am so lucky to have had him, to God be the glory,” Puentevella said.

Dizon's remains are tentatively set to lie in state at De la Salle Greenhills and a return to Bacolod is still being discussed, he also said.*CPG
