Eleven outstanding Batang Pinoy athletes, among them taekwondo jin Therese Bermejo of Trinity Christian School and athletics golden girl Mary Anthony Diesto of Bacolod Tay Tung High School, will attend a two-week summer workshop in London.
The athletes were given a scholarship grant by the British Council of the Philippines and the British Embassy in Manila and will train at St. Bede’s International School in London for their attendance in 2012 London Games.
The scholarship was granted in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission and the Manuel V. Pangilinan Sports Foundation.
Aside from Bermejo and Diesto, the other London-bound athletes are boxer Roberto Miguel Jarnaiz of Cagayan de Oro City, triathlete Gabrielle Allen Santiago of San Andres, Manila, swimmer Ariana Caraos Herranz of San Pablo, Laguna, judoka Floyd Derek Rillera of Baguio City, badminton’s John Edgard Reyes of Malolos, Bulacan and Joella Geva De Vera of Victoria, Laguna, thrower Garry Santiago of Guiguinto, Bulacan, archer Bianca Cristina Gotuaco of Makati City, and weightlifter John Kyle Macrohon of Zamboanga City.
The 11 athletes are multiple gold medalists in last year’s Batang Pinoy Championships held in Naga City.
Citing the role of Batang Pinoy in the development of young talents from the grassroots, Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco said the competition’s continuous growth has accommodated aspiring youthful athletes in the country.
British Council country director Amanda Burrell welcomed the 11 Filipino young athletes in yesterday’s press launch at the Manila Peninsula Hotel.
British Ambassador to the Philippines Stephen Gillie delivered his message about 2012 Olympics, while Justine Gillie, assistant-principal of the host school St. Bede’s, informed the group of the high-level athletic training and English language to be enjoyed by the young athletes. *with a report from PNA
