Okoy River bolstered
by boulder dikes

BY RENE GENOVE

The local government of Sibulan in Negros Oriental, is reinforcing the banks of Okoy River, by installing boulder dikes, costing about P2 million.

The riverbank, along with other infrastructure facilities in the town, had been ravaged by tropical storm “Sendong” recently. A total 268 homes were destroyed and 349 damaged, a press release from the town said.

The provincial government of Negros Oriental set aside P20 million to repair damaged infrastructure, while Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District) gave P2 million to fortify the sides of Okoy River.

The river is the town’s catch basin for various bodies of water, from the far-flung barangay of Enrique Villanueva to the mountain areas in Valencia town. When heavy rains come, the volume of water spills over, the press release added.*RG
