‘Gener' triggers brownouts

Intermittent brownouts have been occurring in several parts of Negros Oriental since Monday due to tropical storm “Gener”.

Elmer Cruz of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said three power outages had triggered emergency shutdowns at various transmission facilities due to strong winds.

On Monday night, parts of Negros Oriental were without electricity from 6:56 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., after the NGCP shut down the Dumaguete-Bacong-Siaton 69kV transmission line to cut a mango tree that leaned over the transmission lines at Barangay Pulantubig in Dumaguete City.

Army, NPA clash
anew in two towns

Government troops clashed with suspected members of the New People's Army in Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, and in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental recently.

A report from the 302nd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army based in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, said a squad-sized bayanihan team of nine soldiers from the 79th Infantry Battalion, encountered around five suspected rebels, while on reconnaissance patrol in Sitio Payawpayawan, Barangay Nagbinlod, Sta. Catalina town Saturday.

1Lt. Roel Morales Jr., spokesperson of the 302nd Brigade, said a firefight occurred for about 20 minutes before the rebels fled southeast. No casualties were reported on the government side while pursuit operations continue, he added..

DOST awards P400,000 to
handicraft business

The Department of Science and Technology has given about P400,000 financial assistance to Orient Gifts Center in Dumaguete City for the technology upgrade of its sinamay-based home furnishings and fashion accessories production, a government press release said.

The DOST, under its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program, provided the funds to the firm for its production machinery, a single computer-aided embroidery machine with embedded software acquired to upgrade and enhance the company's productivity that will yield quality goods.
