Up close and personal
with the lady ambassador

It was a lovely experience meeting Her Excellency, Agnes Nyamande-Pitso, Ambassador of South Africa to the Philippines, who visited Bacolod City recently as guest of honor of the dinner-symposium hosted by the Cebu Institute of Medicine Alumni Association Negros Occidental Chapter.

The lavish affair was sponsored by Aspen Philippines, a South African pharmaceutical company.

We first met Madame Pitso during the luncheon tendered by Dr. Ver Lacson, president of the CIM Alumni, at his residence. Right away, we were impressed with her bubbling personality and her razor-sharp wit. She made all the guests at ease and relaxed in her presence. We also met the beautiful and dynamic Aspen Philippines president and CEO Ace Itchon, who captivated everyone with her charm and dazzling personality.

As usual, Ver presented a superb menu of gustatory delights which we savored with gusto. I noticed the ambassador kept taking a sip of her favorite drink – calamansi sans sugar!

That night, we attended the dinner-symposium at the Bacolod Government Center. Madame Pitso was so impressed with the Government Center and she kept saying how grand it was and how beautiful it looked.

After the sumptuous dinner catered by Bascon Hotel, Dr. Adonis Guancia gave a most interesting lecture on malignancy and its telltale signs. Mayor Bing delivered his message of welcome to everyone who came. Dr. Thelma Fernandez, dean of the CIM, showed the features of this successful Institute, saying it is now the leading School of Medicine in the Philippines.

Lacson thanked all the members of their CIM alumni chapter and Aspen Phil. for their support. Ambassador Pitso gave a short and direct message about making health care affordable and accessible to everyone. Jojo Casaje delivered a brief informative speech about Aspen, while Itchon held the audience spellbound with her impromptu message.*
