IN DUMAGUETE
Closure order issued
vs. 19 lotto outlets
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Dumaguete City government yesterday issued closure notices to 19 lotto outlets for operating without a mayor's permit.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria also designated a team composed of Task Force Sagarr members to deliver the notices and, so far, no hitches have been noted. The operators have been given 15 days to windup their businesses.

Sagarbarria had earlier said the issue on illegal lotto operation could be used as an election concern, but he said he cannot issue business permits to the operators without the approval of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Anti-plastic bags ordinance
to take effect August 28
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A forum on the regulated use of plastic shopping bags on both dry and wet goods in Dumaguete City that will start August 28, was held yesterday at the Dr. Jovito Salonga Center for Law and Development in Silliman University.

Center director Myrish Cadapan Antonio said it will gather those to be affected directly by Ordinance No. 231 regulating the use of plastic shopping bags in Dumaguete, that was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod on August 10, 2011.

The ordinance bans vendors from offering or selling plastic bags to be used as secondary packaging material for wet goods or primary packaging for dry goods, a government press release had earlier said.

Poetry lecture set in Silliman

Dumaguete City-based poet Myrna Peña-Reyes will discuss her poems in a lecture titled “The Father-Daughter Connection” at the Dioscoro Rabor Lecture Hall in Silliman University, 10:15 a.m. August 9, a press release from the school said.

The lecture is part of the Writers Lecture Series initiated by the newly-instituted Edilberto and Edith Tiempo Creative Writing Center of SU.

Peña-Reyes is the author of two poetry collections, titled “The River Singing Stone”, published by Anvil in 1994, and “Almost Home”, printed by the University of the Philippines Press in 2004, the press release also said.
