Special child from Neg. Or.
named Olympics ambassador

BY ALEX PAL

A 15-year-old girl with Down Syndrome will carry the voice of the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific Region in the Asia Pacific Region as ambassador and spokesman in the Special Olympics 2013 World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, on January 26 to February 5, 2013.

Brina Kei Maxino, daughter of 2010 Happiest Pinoy Winston Abella and Alina Maxino, who are both from Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, was chosen by a panel of Special Olympics officials from the USA, Singapore and Malaysia over other candidates from Indonesia, Pakistan and India.

Brina, who will turn 16 on August 31, is the first girl and the first child with Down Syndrome from the Philippines to be chosen and will hold the title for two years.

DOST offers scholarships
to college students

The Department of Science and Technology in Negros Oriental is accepting applicants for this year’s Junior Level Science Scholarship, its press release said.

Regular third year college students presently enrolled in identified science and technology courses in Silliman University and Negros Oriental State University are urged to apply.

An applicant must have a general weighted average of 83 percent and has no failing grade in any subject; not a recipient of any other government or private scholarship; has no pending application for immigration abroad; physically and mentally healthy and morally upright; and a resident of any Negros Oriental city or town in the last four years, the press release said.

4Ps beneficiaries
urged to update status

The Department of Social Welfare and Development is calling on all Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program beneficiaries in Central Visayas to report any change in status, particularly transfer of residence, to avoid removal from the list, its press release said.

Aileen Lariba of the DSWD said they want to ensure that 4Ps beneficiaries receive the right amount of grant in line with their monthly compliance.

She said some families transfer residences without informing the program implementer, resulting in non-monitoring and non-payment of their grants.
