With 40 years of experience on their side, defending champion Chinese Taipei beat Singapore, 66-55, to keep their crown as the 5th Asia Pacific Tchoukball Championships ended yesterday at the West Negros University Gym.
With a 12-point lead in the first period, 32-20, champion coach Fang Shen Zzu said they never felt threatened against Singapore as he saw that the Chinese team has a greater advantage over its opponent.
Fang, who trained most of the teams that joined the tournament, included host Philippines, said the three-day competition showcased tchoukball as a fast emerging sports in Asia.
The second runner-up finish of Team Philippines-Davao, showed how the Filipinos easily adapt to the sports and he was impressed at the pace of their improvement.
He also thanked the people of Bacolod City for supporting tchoukball, adding that among the cities he visited in the country, Bacolod has the most relaxed environment.
“We feel safe here and the facilities at the venue of the competition is good,” Fang said.
Davao won over Thailand, 79-22, prevailed over Korea, 61-20, then routed Indonesia, 84-30, for a third place finish, while host Team Philippines-Bacolod had an impressive performance against Indonesia, 74-29, and against Malaysia, 52-46.
With 70 percent of the Bacolod team composed of Under 18 national players, coach Raymund Jamelo said finishing in the top five is good enough for them.
“We gave our best and we will continue to improve our game,” coach Jamelo said.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei also captured the women’s crown by beating Philippine-Davao squad, while Singapore finished third.*NAB
