The illegal recruitment of 15 farm workers in Brgy. Samac, Mabinay, was foiled by the police recently after they and local officials were tipped about their presence in the area, a government press release said.
Romualdo Señeres of the Visayan Forum Foundation Inc. the recruits were bound for Davao and Bukidnon to work in a sacada farm. He said the local Department of Labor and Employment sought their assistance after a legal recruiter informed them of the illegal hiring going on, the press release said.
The recruits were promised an advance payment of their salaries of around P3,000 each, he added.
The Mabinay police and Brgy. Samac officials, led by Association of Barangay Captains president Ma. Rosario Ocay, located the recruits.
Señeres said Samac had made it a policy for the barangay captain to meet each resident seeking barangay clearance. He said the recruits were convinced not to leave for Davao and Bukidnon.
However, the illegal recruiter was not found or identified, the press release also said.
In June 2012, the police rescued a minor from Mabinay who departed for Bacolod City after being hired by an illegal recruiter, who used the identification card of a legal one.
Señeres said Mabinay has become vulnerable to illegal recruitment due to its proximity to Bacolod City, the press release added.*
