Sight Saving Month

The Optometric Association of the Philippines Negros Occidental Chapter has lined up a series of activities to celebrate August as Sight Saving Month, a press release from the group said.

In a meeting with Mayor Evelio Leonardia at the Bacolod Government Center recently, the group said it will conduct eye examinations for the 4,000 city employees at their respective offices, provide ophthalmic frames subsidy for indigent residents of Bacolod, and a lecture on nutrition and eyesight care.

Other activities in line with the theme “Optometrists on the Go for Healthy Vision Today and Tomorrow" are a medical mission in Brgy. Cabug on August 10; distribution of eyeglasses to elementary pupils of public schools in Victorias City sponsored by the Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office, and the Victorias CHO, Aug. 14; vision screening of preschoolers of Newton Jison Elementary School in Brgy. Taloc, Bago City, Negros Occidental, Aug. 16; and a public information drive on nutrition and the eye over the radio on August 23, the press release also said.

Highlight of the celebration will be "An Experience of the Healthiest Foods on the Planet" prepared by Dr. Albert Jo, in cooperation with the Negros Occidental Optometric Society at Mai Pao Restaurant, 6th Street, Bacolod.

Dr. Melissa Anglo, who chairs the activities, also inducted the new set of OAP Neg. Occ. officers at the Rapha Valley, Don Salvador Benedicto town in the province, led by Edita Estevez, with Omega Dato-on as vice president, Susan Sioco, secretary; Maritess Sianson, assistant secretary; Merce Sapa, treasurer; Irene Lanado, asst. treasurer; Rebine Alcobilla, auditor; and Noemi Chua, public information officer, the press release added.*

Carmona running for councilor;
barangay heads support Sayson

The Yellow Army yesterday endorsed the candidacy of radio broadcaster Ray Carmona, anchorman of the program “Banwa Binagbinaga” over DYAF Radyo Veritas in Bacolod City, for councilor of the Liberal Party in the City.

Joel Dojillo, its chairman, who has initiated a signature campaign said they decided to endorse Carmona because he has been supportive of the President’s “Matuwid na daan” campaign and the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Meanwhile, Acting Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said he believes he has the support of the barangay captains associated with the Grupo Progreso, under the Nationalist People’s Coalition in Bacolod City.

He said there are over 30 barangays captains associated with their group while the other political camp has about 17.

Sayson said the NPC has no candidate for vice mayor yet. He said there is no rush since the filing of the certificates of candidacy will be in October yet.*CGS

Guv backs Zubiri call
vs. sugar tariff

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said he supports Former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri’s  call for an extension on the lifting of tariffs on imported sugar from 2015 to 2018 to allow the Philippine sugar industry to be ready to  survive.

Under  the ASEAN Free Trade Area agreement tariff on imported sugar entering the country dropped from 38 percent last year to 28 percent this year. It will further drop to 18 percent in 2013, 10 percent in 2014 and 5 percent in 2015.

The AFTA agreement is disadvantageous to the Philippines, the governor said.*CPG

Golez joins launching
of Child Health Now

Bacolod Rep. Anthony Rolando Golez, Jr. and Deputy Speaker Lorenzo  Tañada III, joined the Child Health Now launching of World Vision  on  July 31, at the North Wing Lobby of the House of Representatives, a press release from his Office said.

Present  were child health advocate and media perosonality Tintin Bersola-Babao, World Vision Chairperson and Camarines Norte Rep. Liwayway Vinzons-Chato; and head of the Family Health Office of the Department of Health, Dr. Honorata Catibog, the press release said.

World Vision Development Foundation is a non-governmental organization that advocates child education and welfare.  The Child Health Now is a program of World Vision aimed at eradicating preventable deaths among children.

Tañada gave the welcome remarks and a message on the importance of the program of World Vision for child health.

Golez  gave a message and showcased the several actions affecting child health that the House of Representatives have been working on, the press release said.

He is co-author of the law that addresses the concern for preventable diseases by requiring vaccination after birth to all infants, it added.

 The event was headed by World Vision chairperson and Camarines Norte Rep. Liwayway Vinzons-Chato who was also  former Commissioner of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, the press release also said.

The launching of Child Health Now was also highlighted by the ribbon cutting for the photo and painting exhibit showing “Child Health Now: Together We Can End Preventable Deaths, the release added”*CGS
