Fisherman drowned in Silay

A fisherman drowned while trying to retrieve his fishing boat in Silay City, Negros Occidental Sunday, the Philippine Coast Guard reported yesterday.

PCG-Bacolod head, Lt. Commander Dominador Senador, identified the fatality as Henry Bibas, 36, of Sitio Bungol in Brgy. Balaring, Silay City.

Initial investigation showed that Bibas and his brother Edwin were fixing their fish pen at the shoreline of Brgy. Balaring at about 11 a.m., when he saw their fishing boat being carried away by the water current and tried to retrieve it.

A search and rescue operation conducted for Henry Bibas Sunday failed to find him. His body was found floating at about 6 a.m. yesterday by their neighbor Dennis Divino, who is also a fisherman.

Meanwhile, the search and retrieval operation for the four other fishermen reported missing since last week in Cauayan and Hinigaran towns continues, Senador said.

The missing fishermen are Johnny “alias Panoy”, 33 and Roel “alias Bong-Bong”, 32, both surnamed Tupiz and residents of Brgy. Ginhulngan, Cauayan and two unidentified fishermen from Hinigaran.

The body of Francis Jack Meniado, 50 of Brgy. Daan, Victorias was retrieved at the shorelines of Sitio Ubay in Brgy. Salong, Manapla, on Thursday, six days after he was reported missing.*APN

Bacolod cops
arrest ‘robber’

A suspected robber was apprehended by Station 8 policemen in Purok Kabulakan 1, Brgy. Singcang-Airport, Bacolod City, yesterday.

Station 8 chief, Senior Insp. Jerick Filosofo, identified the suspect as Monico Muñez, 29, of Purok Sampaguita 1, Brgy. Singcang Airport.

Reynaldo Saluta, 32, of Purok Sampaguita, also of the barangay, said he was on the trisikad driven by Geron Juban, 32, of Raymund Street, when they passed Muñez and four unidentified men having drinks beside the road.

Saluta said one of them flagged them down, another two stood behind the trisikad and punched Juban, and the fourth choked him and took his cellular phone valued at P8,000.

Muñez was nabbed in a follow-up operation and has been positively identified as one of those who robbed and punched Saluta and Juban, the police said.

Muñez, who is now detained at Police Station 8, denied participation in the robbery, and said he has no reason to do it because he is a backyard hog raiser.

The Bacolod police said six persons have been arrested for robbery since August 1. Police director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz said they are intensifying the anti-criminality campaign in anticipation of the possible increase in theft and robbery cases due to tiempos muertos (dead season).*APN
