Getting a lift from their bench in the crucial stage of the game, Phoenix 99-2K registered an 80-67 win against Petron 2001-02, 2012, while New Energy Mktg./Shakey’s 2008, 2009-11 repulsed the second half rally of Eleven Degrees 1996-98 for a 79-70 victory in the 5th SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup at the Msgr. John B. Liu Activities Center.
Joshua Co delivered 17 points in the opening quarter, leading Petron to a 26-23 advantage even as Paolo Li and Jan Jan Lopue combined for 14 points for Phoenix.
Phoenix bounced back in the next two quarters and outscored Petron, 38-23, as Jordan Chua scored eight points, while Onsi Lim and Eduardo Ng delivered two triples each to take a 61-49 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Petron Marcelino Tan scored all of his nine points in the fourth quarter, but it was the turn of the Phoenix starters to carry the scoring load led by Lopue with seven points, while Bogs Ongsingco and Paolo Li added fourth points each to put away Petron.
Li finished with 16 points, Lopue scored 11, Jason Yap hit 7 points, and Ongsingco had 6 points.
Joshua Co finished with 20 points in a losing effort, Ralph Ong and Joshua Chua with 6 points apiece, and Martin Ballesteros scored 5 points.
New Energy Mktg./Shakey’s first half cushion was enough to carry it to victory, 42-21, with 9 players contributing led by Ted Ballesteros with 8 points and Mark Coo, 7 points.
Eleven Degrees got a combined output of 11 points from Arvin Chua and Tim Garrucho.
Dino Tongco’s inside incursions netted him 12 points as 11 Degrees finally outscored SHakey’s in the third quarter, 26-23 . Shakey’s Kevin Banzon and Luigi Coo picked up 7 points apiece.
With momentum on their side, 11 Degrees continued to cut the lead to a single digit, spearheaded by the 10 points of Garrucho, but Charles Del Castillo and La Mendoza scored the last 8 points for New Energy to stymied the comeback bid of 11 Degrees.
Luigi Coo paced New Energy with 14 points, backstopped by Del Castillo with 12, Danty Ma and Daniel Ong with 6 points each.
Garrucho finished with 19 points, Tongco picked up 16, Berto Uy scored 9 points, and Arvin Chua with 8 points.
