Road repair triggers traffic woes
BY ADRIAN NEMES III
Acting Bacolod City Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson and Traffic Management Unit head Chief Insp. Luisito Acebuche slammed the Department of Public Works and Highways yesterday for reconstructing the portion of Circumferential road near the city’s government center without coordinating with them.

Acebuche said he has received numerous complaints from the public since last week about worsening traffic congestion in the area because of the road repair being undertaken by the DPWH.

The problem could have been lessened if not avoided, with the proper coordination as re-routing could have been planned earlier.

He said he met with the project supervisor, whose name he did not mention, last week, and asked him how the road repair pushed through without proper coordination with the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, the TMU and the city government.

If traffic congestion worsens because of road repairs, it is the city government, the TMU and the BTAO being blamed by the public and not the DPWH, Acebuche said.

A temporary rerouting scheme was implemented yesterday at the Circumferential road where all vehicles going to the Government Center have to pass the Gonzaga bridge at the Doña Juliana Subdivision, Sayson said.

A one-way scheme was also in effect for vehicles going north of

Circumferential road to ease the traffic congestion in the area, he said.

Sayson added that the Sangguniang Panglungsod of Bacolod will deliberate during their session today on the proposal of Acebuche for the traffic rerouting scheme to be implemented from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. while the reconstruction of the Circumferential road is on-going

Ten enforcers are assigned at the area to man the traffic flow at the Circumferential road.

DPWH District engineer Rey Venturina could not be reached for comment up to yesterday.*APN
