Guv calls on Negrenses to help,
warns vs. clogging of waterways

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday called on Negrenses to thank God for sparing Negros Occidental from the devastating floods that hit Metro Manila and to donate whatever they can to help the victims.

Donations can be made through private entities gathering assistance, because, if it is done through the provincial government, it might be misconstrued to be politically motivated, he said.

The provincial government will also look into what assistance it can give, he added.

The governor also called on Negrenses to practice proper waste segregation and to be careful about where they dispose used plastic bags and non biodegradable waste that could clog drainage systems and cause floods.

He stressed the need to take precautions amid freak and erratic weather conditions that could hit Negros Occidental, too.

A big problem in towns and cities of Negros Occidental is river siltation, he said, pointing out that dredging operations are currently being undertaken in EB Magalona town that, in the past, used to be hit by flooding. The dredging work has been a big help, he noted.

The governor also called for the enforcement of provisions for proper drainage systems in structures being built, to prevent the blockage of the flow of water that triggers floods.*CPG
