Top four NOPSSCEA teams clash
as LNA7 collegiate cagefest opens

All set for their respective bids for this year’s NOPSSCEA title, the University of St. La Salle Stingers and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams will test each other’s strength at 4 p.m. this afternoon as the 1st LNA7 Collegiate Invitational Basketball Tournament opens at the West Negros University Gym.

In the second game, NOPSSCEA defending champion WNU Mustangs will clash against the resurging Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod Eagles.

Forming the nucleus of the UNO-R Rams are veterans Francis John Parreño, Coleen Jude Testa, Kim Dimaranan, Ritcher Santillan, Joenel Billones, John Guirnela, Fred Jay Parreño, Mark Anthony Papa, Joery Jarlata, Melogy Erojo and Melvy Derder.

WNU Mustangs shoots for
14th straight crown

Hoping to extend the winning streak that started 14 years ago under the tutelage of coach Elvis Atinado, the West Negros University Mustangs will be gunning for their 14th straight title this year in men’s basketball of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association.

The pressure to continue the `tradition’ rests on the shoulders of coach Troy Sarabia, who is in his fourth year as head coach of the Mustangs. Sarabia joined the team in 2009 and equalized his predecessor, Dennis Tumayan’s record of three titles. Atinado holds the distinction of steering the Mustangs to a seven-straight NOPSSCEA championship from 1999 to 2005.
