Mustangs trounce Eagles

Despite nursing a flu, Rushmore Catalino scored 23 points to lead the West Negros University Mustangs in a come-from-behind win against the resurging Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Eagles, 79-72, as the 1st LNA7 Collegiate Basketball Invitational Tournament opened yesterday at the WNU Gym.

In the first game, the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams overpowered the University of St. La Salle Stingers for an 83-76 win, giving the crowd at the gym a preview of what to expect when the 32nd NOPSSCEA men’s basketball opens in the coming weeks.

Coming out strong in the first quarter, the Eagles surprised the NOPSSCEA defending champs with a barrage of points from Jan Daniel Javelosa, Jan Mark Delos Santos, and Alfred Valle, who combined for 18 points as CSA-B took a 22-18 lead.

Ceres team posts win
in SJI Alumni cagefest

Ceres Pasalubong 2006-07 debuted with a bang as it registered an 86-61 win against Raga Raga Inc. 2003-05, while New Energy Mktg./Shakey’s notched its second victory with an 84-69 domination of Waterfull/Fyr Fyter, in Tuesday night’s game of the 5th SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup at the Msgr. John B. Liu Activities Center.

Waterfull surprised Shakey’s in the first quarter as it took a 28-17 lead led by Alex Fernandez with 14 points and Michael Ang’s six points, even as Charles Del Castillo had seven points for Shakey’s.

A 10-0 blast at the start of the second quarter by New Energy Marketing cut the lead to a point, but Waterfull’s good passing plays resulted in several easy basket for Tubby Villanueva, who scored seven points, to keep his team on top at 42-39 by halftime.

4th Bro. Ceci Hojilla
volleyfest opens today

The 4th Bro.Ceci Hojilla Memorial Culp Inter-Club Volleyball Championship opens today at the USLS Covered Court with 27 teams vying for the title in their respective division.

Tournament organizer and Negros Occidental Volleyball Association president Roger Banzuela said the 27 teams are bracketed in two categories -- Class A- Open and Class B, for both men and women.

An annual volleyball spectacle in Bacolod City organized as a tribute to the late Bro. Cecilio Montelibano Hojilla, a well-loved La Sallian brother, the Bro. Ceci Hojilla Memorial Cup draws participation from different volleyball clubs in the city and neighboring areas.
