Tree-planting budget hiked

Six months after the powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the 1st district of Negros Oriental, affected residents have joined hands with other groups in the reforestation of the landslide area in Brgy. Planas, Guihulngan City, by planting trees.

They were joined by the Philippine Army and other government agencies, including the departments of Environment and Natural Resources, Education and Social Welfare and Development.

Capt. Ariel Quirog, 11th Infantry Battalion Civil Military Operations officer, said the participants planted more than 300 fruit and non-bearing fruit trees, intended to prevent land erosion, on Aug. 6.

The landslide area in Brgy. Planas, Guihulngan, turned into a mass grave for the 61 earthquake victims, who have not been found until now, military records show.

Before the tree planting activity, Quirog said DENR employees gave a lecture on its importance and benefits to the community.

More than 500 persons have participated in the activity.

Lt. Col. Willy Isaac, 11th IB commander, and his men, meanwhile, held a dialog on July 28 and Aug. 3, with about 400 teachers in Isabela, to promote the “Bayanihan Para Sa Kinabukasan ng mga Kabataan”, of the Armed Forces Internal Peace and Security campaign plan.

Quirog said Isaac stressed that the 11IB intends to generate as much support as possible from various stakeholders of society in advocating peace initiatives in Moises Padilla and neighboring areas.

Isaac also said that teachers have a crucial role in guiding the youth to the right direction in life, especially because teenagers are in the stage of exploring the world outside family, and are vulnerable to bad elements of society.

‘Vote for Bacoleña at
Artista Academy’

Bacoleños are urged to vote for the 16-year-old Chanel Morales, the bet of city and Region 6 in the “Artista Academy” reality talent search on Kapatid Network TV 5, a press release from the station said.

Chanel landed among top 16 from among 13,000 hopefuls who auditioned for the show. She was a former trainee and segment host of a TV station in the city, the press release added.

Dubbed "Miss Conservative of Bacolod" in the ‘Artista Academy’, Chanel was also cited as the pre-show favorite for her performances during Saturday night's first "Live Exam".

She is the daughter of Royce and Emie Morales of Bacolod.

Supporters can vote for her by texting AA CHANEL and sending the message to 5656, the press release also said.

The talent search is hosted by Cesar Montano and Marvin Agustin, and airs on TV5 Monday to Friday at 11:45 a.m. and 9 p.m., and every Saturday at 9:30 p.m., the press release added.*

Nominations for the Institutional Awards 2012-13 will be accepted until October 31 this year by the University of St. La Salle, a press release from the school said.

The awards include Fides, given to individuals of exemplary faith founded on a commitment to faith and service to the Church, religious education and the principles of peace and justice; SignumLasallianum, an award for individuals or institutions in recognition of their exemplary contribution to education and/or the Lasallian mission; and the St. La Salle Award for outstanding alumni whose personal and professional lives exemplify the ideals of the school, the press release also said.

The Servants Communities will hold their 9th Visayas area conference August 17 to 19 at the Middle Town Inn in Bacolod City, a press release from organizers said.
