Team 1 Willtrade Marketing/Phoenix registered its second win with an 85-69 victory over two-time defending champion Team 5 as competition heats up in the Bacolod Tay Tung High School Alumni Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym over the weekend.
Bong Lopez sizzled in the first quarter as he scored 16 points, while Siopao Dechavez and Rommel Ting backed him up with five points each as the Rey Pandoro-mentored Team 1 had a 32-9 fiery start.
Carlos Chiu joined the scoring spree with 13 points in the second quarter as Team 1 dominated the first half at 49-27.
Sustaining their advantage in the third quarter, Jepoy Nieles, Third Delloso, and Larry Bril carried on Team 1’s defensive work in the low post area for a 21-point cushion entering the payoff quarter.
Team 5 tried to salvage the situation in the final minutes as Carl Edemne, Babbam Guevarra, and RB Chua combined their efforts to cut the lead to five points with five minutes left in the fourth period.
But a short jumper from Delloso and three successive triples from Nieles cut short the rally with Roy Dominguez and Malvin Pineda making their presence felt to turn back Team 5.
Lopez led Team 1 with 16 points, Chiu added 13, Nieles and Delloso had 11 points each.
Edemne topscored for Team 5 with 22 points, RB Chua delivered 13, and Guevarra finished with 9 points.
Meanwhile, Team 3 eked out a 74-73 squeaker against Team 0 in the third game, while Team 9 beat BTTHS varsity team, 122-117 in the opening game.
It was a second loss for the varsity squad after a heartbreaking 88-86 loss to Team 8, Saturday.
Team 7 had a 91-76 win against Team 4 also posted a win against Team 4, while Team 6 notched a 99-70 victory against Team 2.*NAB
