Phoenix dumps TD/Jollibee,
Petron blows away Legends

Phoenix 99/2K came from behind to pull the rug from under Terra Dolce/Jollibee (1990-92) for a 74-71 win, while Petron 2001/02/12 routed Legends/2009, 81-61, in the 5th SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup at Msgr. John B. Liu Activity Center.

Terra Dolce led as much as 11 points in the second quarter as it dominated the first half, 33-28.

Phoenix caught up with Jollibee by the end of the third quarter and tied the game at 49-all as Paolo Li scored nine points even as Peewee Demonteverde scored seven points for Terra Dolce.

Li continued to bring it on in the payoff quarter as he added 10 points, while Siegfried Bitanga and Mark Jimenez hit from the outside to give Phoenix a 6-point lead.

But Richard Co’s back-to-back jumpers and Glenn Ortaliz’s breakaway layups cut the lead to three points. After two missed free throws by Phoenix, Terra Dolce had a last chance to tie the game but Demonteverde missed a triple as time expired.

Li paced Phoenix with 28 points, Jimenez and Jason Yap added 8 points each, Bitanga made 7 points and Bogs Ongsingco had 6 points.

Demonteverde scored 25 points on a losing effort, as Richard Co tallied 14 , Ortaliz contributed 13, Bol Manaloto, who fouled out, had 11 points.

In the 2nd game, The Legends/2009 scored the first nine points in the game but failed to keep the momentum as they the lead at the half, 38-24.

The lead ballooned to 22 points in the first minutes of the third quarter as Marcelino Tan scored on six straight fastbreak points. Legends could not crack the zone defense of Petron, with the latter having the height, heft and speed advantage.

The Legends/2009 was able to cut the lead to less than 20 points but Ralph Ong, who hauled several rebounds and and eight putbacks, sealed the win for Petron.*NAB
