Kin of slain man
want cop dead
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

“He claimed the life of our loved one, we want him dead, too!”

This is what Nelia Bello, 64, said of Police Officer 3 Kenneth Cerbo, who shot and killed her nephew, Greggy Alfonso, 23, of Purok San Roque, Brgy. Tangub and injured her other nephew, Rodolfo Alfonso, 25, in the barangay at about 10 p.m. Saturday over an argument.

As of yesterday, Cerbo of Calinog, Iloilo and assigned at the Bingawan police station in the same province remains at large, but City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz said they expect him to surrender any time this week. A tracker team was formed to locate him, de la Paz said.

Bello said that her nephew, and another relative, Melchor, went to the store of Cerbo to buy ice but the suspect came out and shot Greggy in the chest.

She said Rodolfo, who was about a meter away from Greggy came to his rescue, but was also shot by Cerbo in the abdomen, while Melchor, who saw the incident fled for his safety.

Bello, who described her nephews as good-natured persons, added that their entire family is calling for the immediate arrest of Cerbo so justice will be served to his nephews.

“Greggy’s father Danilo was celebrating his birthday Sunday but instead of celebrating, we are mourning Greggy’s death”, Bello said.

Reports over AKSYON Radyo Bacolod said that several residents in Purok Seaside, Tangub, where the shooting happened, have claimed that the policeman, who built a house for his alleged other woman in the area, usually fires his gun when he is intoxicated.

The residents added at the time of the incident, the policemen arrived in time and the suspect was still in the area, but they did not arrest him.

De la Paz explained, however, that the police could not just arrest Cerbo because he was armed and may fight back.

Senior Insp. Johnny Tumambing, chief of Bingawan City police station, told the DAILY STAR that he is in contact with Cerbo through text and has urged him to surrender.

Tumambing also said that Cerbo did not say whether he is going to surrender soon, and added that he already has a lawyer.

Meanwhile, de la Paz said they will still determine if Police Officer 1 Ryan Lumogdang’s action of shooting Joel Saavedra, 19, of Purok Cereza, Brgy. 3 in Bacolod in the barangay Friday night, was done in self defense.

If they found that Lumogdang’s action was uncalled for, then he will face administrative and criminal charges, De la Paz said.

Lumogdang was on his motorcycle on his way home at about 9:30 p.m. when he saw Saavedra and an unidentified companion sitting in a bench in front of the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School. When he approached them, the two fled.

The policemen chased them until they reached Purok Nangka, where Saavedra allegedly shot Lumogdang with a .38 caliber revolver but missed prompting him to shoot back, hitting Saavedra on the leg and not in his back, as earlier reported.*APN
