IN DUMAGUETE
BIR padlocks hardware store

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Bureau of Internal Revenue District 79 Office based in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, yesterday ordered the closure of a business establishment when its owner failed to pay delinquent taxes amounting to about P300,000.

BIR 79 District Office chief Cresencio Agad led the team that served the notice of closure to the proprietor of the Omega Store at Perdices Street, in downtown Dumaguete.

They, however, found that the store that sells hardware goods, power tools and other construction supplies had already been closed for the day.

The owner, whose identity the BIR withheld, arrived later and voluntarily opened the establishment to let the BIR staff in, received and signed the notice of closure, and turned over the keys to the front and back doors of the store.

The Omega Store is the first business establishment in the city to be padlocked under the BIR Oplan Kandado program for 2012. Agad said it took BIR-Dumaguete a while before it could implement the program as there were processes to be followed.

He said the program is not just after the collection of delinquent taxes but aims to serve as a warning and reminder to the public that the government is sincere in its law enforcement efforts.

Agad said that his office had reminded the Omega Store owner to settle his dues since last year.

The store can resume operation within five days after the delinquent taxes have been paid or after arrangement has been made with the BIR for a payment scheme.

Agad said Oplan Kandado is usually carried out in a confidential manner so as not to put a taxpayer to shame, but he could not explain why the store was already closed when the BIR arrived.

He said the government is serious in running after tax evaders. In 2009, the BIR 79 padlocked three business establishments, five in 2010, and two in 2011.*JFP
