Army soldiers confiscated about 500 board feet of illegally-acquired lumber in Brgy. Tacpao, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, in a series of anti-illegal operations in central Negros, Capt. Ariel Quirog, 11th Infantry Battalion Civil Military Operations officer, said yesterday.
Quirog said the recovery of the lumber will serve as a warning to those behind the timber-poaching activities in the hinterlands of Guihulngan, that the military will not hesitate to arrest them.
Personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources stationed in Guihulngan are assisted by the 11IB in their forest protection campaign.
Quirog said the poachers cut trees in the forest to make way for their “kaingin (slash-and-burn)” farming.
Soldiers of the 11IB recently spearheaded tree-planting activities in Brgys. Planas and Binobohan, all in Guihulngan City, to help the local populace with disaster mitigation, he added.*GPB
