WNU Mustangs up to regain
NOPSSCEA football crown

After a bleak season last year for the West Negros University Mustangs football team, head coach Norman Fegidero yesterday said that they are ready to regain the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association crown this year.

“We are looking at getting back into the championship and regain the title – which is the dream of every team,” said Fegidero, who is also a former national men’s team mentor.

“Compared to last year, my current team – though composed of 60 percent rookies, have a better chance to enter the finals. This is because we have good players who can deliver,” he said.

The Mustangs have dominated the NOPSSCEA football tournament from early 1980’s towards the middle of 1990’s when the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams entered the championship picture.

“When I started as the Mustangs’ head coach in 2000, we earned the back-to-back title before we lost to University of St. La Salle in 2002. But, from 2003 until 2009, we able to hold the crown,” Fegidero said.

The Rams won the title in 2010 while USLS is the defending champion after beating UNO-R in the finals last year.

The Mustangs is composed of keepers Leoben Wayco, Neil Farochelin and John Rey Catalino; forwards Abner Uberas, Marcelo Desucatan, Rodrigo Joven, Jimuel Arriola and Froilan Mendoza; midfielders Daniel Ramos, Carlo Lucero, Bon Jovi Sison, Eduardo Requiron, Rudennis Palomo, Crismello Aguilar, Jerald Paparon and Harris Segovia.

Meanwhile, joining Fegidero in the coaching task are Jayme Poderoso and Ian Combate.*
