Wanted cop told:
Show up or be AWOL

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

“Show up or you will be tagged as absent without leave.”

That was the order of Police Regional Office-6 Deputy Director for Administration Senior Supt. Manuel Felix yesterday to Police Officer 3 Kenneth Cerbo, the prime suspect in a shooting incident in Brgy. Tangub, Bacolod City, Sunday that resulted in the death of a man and caused injury to his cousin.

Under the rules of the Philippine National Police, a policeman will be tagged AWOL if he does not report for duty for 30 consecutive days, Felix said.

Cerbo, of Calinog town, Iloilo, who is assigned at the Bingawan town police station in the same province, has failed to report for duty for two days now, his commander, Senior Insp. Johnny Tumambing told the DAILY STAR.

Tumambing said the last time he communicated with Cerbo through text, the policeman told him that he will only surface if his legal counsel will tell him to do so. He advised Cerbo to surrender as soon as possible to mitigate the penalties for his crime.

Cerbo shot Greggy Alfonso, 23, of Purok San Roque on the chest and also shot his cousin, Rodolfo Alfonso, 25, in the abdomen while they were buying ice at his store at about 10 p.m. Sunday.

Greggy died at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital while Rodolfo is still confined there.

Cerbo claimed he only did it to defend himself as Rodolfo allegedly has an improvised firearm, an allegation that the victims’ family vehemently denied.

Lilia Bello, aunt of the Alfonsos, had said they want Cerbo dead too so he could repay what he did to her nephews.

Bello said their entire family is calling for a swift resolution to the case and for the immediate arrest of Cerbo, so justice will be served to her nephews, who, she said, are good-natured men.

The Bacolod City Police is now preparing the necessary charges to be filed against Cerbo, probably today, City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, said.

Meanwhile, de la Paz exonerated Police Officer 1 Ryan Lumogdang from criminal and administrative liability in connection with the shooting of a teenager in Purok Nangka, Brgy. 3, Bacolod on Friday last week.

He said Lumogdang only shot Joel Saavedra, 19, of Purok Kamunsil, Brgy. 3 in self defense because the teenager fired a shot at him first, using a .38 caliber revolver, was recovered after the incident.

Based on the report of the Investigation and Detective Management Branch of BCPO, Lumogdang had no intention to seriously injure Saavedra and only wanted to subdue him.

De la Paz said they will file charges for direct assault upon an agent of a person in authority and for illegal possession of firearms against Saavedra, who was treated at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital for the wound he sustained in his leg.

De la Paz added that they will ask the court to revoke Saavedra’s probation for the other illegal gun possession charge filed against him last year, while he will recommend an award for Lumogdang.*APN
