Gov’t urged to address
strengthening of peso

An official of a Filipino-owned manufacturing company is urging the government to help exporters address the continued strengthening of the peso against the dollar.

Oriental and Motolite Marketing Corp. president Don Albert Cuesta, in a forum dubbed "New Paradigm on Foreign Exchange Management" in Makati yesterday, said local manufacturers were facing threats of closing down because of the decline in their competitiveness vis-à-vis foreign counterparts.

Exporters have been urging the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas  in particular to address the continuing improvement of the peso against the dollar citing that this is hurting their sector.

‘Wages for drivers, conductors
must be based on local needs’

The compensation schemes of drivers and conductors must focus on the local situation to sustain the needs of workers, Dominic Abad, vice chairman for Western Visayas of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board, said yesterday.

Abad, who spoke at the orientation on the Department Order 118-12 of the Department of Labor and Employment yesterday at the ABC Hall in Bacolod City, said there are general parameters that have to be checked before the DOLE and the parties involved can agree on the minimum wages for drivers and conductors.

The compensation scheme also involves the safety of the riding public, road and bus conditions, working hours of the workers, and other factors related to the wage benefits of the drivers and conductors, he said.

Motorists told to report
erring helmet dealers

Director Dominic Abad of the Department of Trade and Industry Western Visayas yesterday urged the public to report to their office dealers and retailers distributing helmets without the Philippine Standards mark or the Import Commodity Clearance sticker.

Abad who was in Bacolod City yesterday said customers may request for the ICC certificate issued by the Bureau of Product Standards to the dealers to prove that ICC stickers attached to their units are valid and genuine.

Dealers and retailers caught selling helmets that have fake ICC stickers will be held liable, and will be penalized, Abad added.
