P77,500 worth
of sugar stolen

Thirty-one sacks of class “A” sugar, valued at P77,500, were stolen from a warehouse at the Bacolod City reclamation area yesterday.

Security guard Danilo Demaclid, 45, of Brgy. Zone 6, Pulupandan town, Negros Occidental, and employed by the Intrepid Security System Inc., told the police he discovered at about 6 a.m. that the room where the sugar is kept had been forced open.

Investigation conducted by Senior Police Officer 1 Dante Escorpion showed that the suspects destroyed the two padlocks to gain entrance to the room.

A follow-up operation led to the recovery of six sacks and the arrest of a suspect, in Purok Masagana, Brgy. 6, Bacolod at about 8:15 a.m., Escorpion said.

He identified the suspect as Jose Morandarte, “alias Libre and Amay”, 37, of Purok Balinday, Brgy. 2, Bacolod, who is now in police custody.

Morandarte told the police that his neighbor, Ryan Mondragon, allegedly masterminded the theft. He also identified his cohorts as certain Glen Olvidado, Oliver Olvidado and an “alias Toto”, Escorpion said.

Oliver Tupan, auditor of Lopez Premium, the company that owns the stolen sacks of sugar, identified the recovered items as theirs.*APN

IN CAUAYAN
Dried fish trader robbed

A dried fish trader was robbed of P40,000 at gunpoint at the highway of Brgy. Inayawan, Cauayan town, Negros Occidental, Wednesday night, police records show.

Chief Insp. Romeo Leyte, Cauayan police chief, did not identify the trader but said yesterday that the highway robbers, who were on a motorcycle, took advantage of the absence of barangay tanods and policemen, at night at the two police outposts in barangays Bulata and Inayawan, in the town.

He added that highway robbers are getting bolder because the victims are not interested in filing charges against them.

Leyte said the highway robbery incidents in Cauayan had temporarily stopped, with the arrest of a fugitive policeman alleged to be the mastermind in the series of heists in the past years.

He said it is possible that the suspects who had victimized the dried fish trader are remnants of the highway robbery group.

Leyte said that while they have some suspects in the robbery, the police cannot arrest them unless the victims and witnesses execute affidavits that are needed for the filing of charges.

Leyte said he cannot deploy policemen at the two police outposts at nighttime, as they may became magnets for operations by the New People’s Army because of their firearms.

Investigations by the Cauayan PNP also showed that highway robbers frequently stage hold-ups in the uphill areas of the town because they are notpopulated, and areabout 36 kilometers away from the police station.

SPO4 Alvin Cuenca, Cauayan deputy police chief, had said earlier that since the victims are not interested in filing charges, highway robbery has become a source of livelihood for the perpetrators.

Last year, a group of businessmen engaged in the sale and distribution of consumer products sought the help of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. on the series of highway robberies in Sipalay and Hinoba-an, that victimized salesmen and delivery personnel.*GPB
