Lopez pushes for
protection of groundwater
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

An ordinance titled “groundwater protection” that will regulate the extraction of groundwater in Bacolod City is being proposed by Bacolod Councilor Carlos Jose Lopez.

The ordinance said water is vital to nationaldevelopment and it has become increasingly necessary for government to intervene actively in improving the management of water resources.

The ordinance said damaged and unused wells and jetmatic pumps can be a source of disease causing microrganisms that can seep through the groundwater supply especially during the rainy season.

There must be strict adherence to the standards set by the National Water Resources Board for proposed deep wells and jetmatic pumps in order to balance the needs of development and protection of our environment, it said.

. The ordinance added that the planting of trees aims to promote environmental awareness and protection of the Social Transformation through Environmental Protection to Protect Earth Always Remember Life (STEP to PEARL).

Lopez is the chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry and the Committee on Fisheries and Agriculture.*CGS
