Transport protest
looms as oil prices rise
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

The United Negros Drivers and Operators Center is gearing up for a nationwide mass mobilization, possibly this month, against oil price increases and other issues hounding the transport sector in the Philippines.

UNDOC secretary general Diego Malacad, said yesterday, that they have met with their mother organization, the Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytors Nationwide (Piston).

Additional oil price increases are expected on Wednesday this week and on Monday next week, Malacad also said.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. announced yesterday price increase of its fuel products in areas earlier affected by monsoon rains and heavy flooding, effectively lifting the price freeze implemented last week

Shell hiked its prices of premium and unleaded gasoline by P1.80 per liter, regular gasoline by P1.70 per liter, kerosene by P1.60 per liter, and diesel by P1.50 per liter.

The price movement is effective only in areas covered by the earlier price freeze last week, Shell said in its text advisory.

Total Philippines and Chevron Philippines (formerly Caltex) also increased their fuel products 6 a.m. and at noon yesterday, respectively.

Eastern Petroleum Philippines, an independent player, said it would add P1.80 per liter on premium, P1.70 per liter on regular, P1.60 per liter on kerosene and P1.50 per liter on diesel at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

The areas covered by the one-week hike deferment include the entire National Capital Region (NCR), Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales and Rizal. Sta. Cruz and Pagsanjan in Laguna as well as Bacoor, Kawit and Rosario in Cavite.

Aside from oil price increases, UNDOC is also protesting the proposal of the Land Transportation Office to replace driver's licenses with identification cards, Malacad said.

Under this new scheme, drivers will undergo training under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority before they are issued identification cards, he said.*APN/PNA
