Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. is no longer the provincial chairman of the Nationalist People’s Coalition in Negros Occidental
Kabankalan Mayor Isidro Zayco confirmed yesterday that he has already received a copy of his appointment as the new NPC provincial chairman.
Zayco said his appointment order was signed by NPC president Frisco San Juan. He and three other Negros Occidental mayors, who used to be affiliated with Lakas-NUCD, took their oath as new NPC members last month in Manila, without Marañon, who was not invited to the activity, although he was still the NPC provincial chairman then.
Marañon yesterday confirmed that he will attend a scheduled August 30 informal meeting in Metro Manila of the six Negros Occidental congressmen, after he was informed about it by Zayco.
While he has no idea who will be the presiding officer, Marañon, clarified that it will not be a meeting of the United Negros Alliance (UNA), a group of elected officials in Negros Occidental affiliated with different national political parties.
Alvarez, who also confirmed his attendance at the meeting, said the topics, to be discussed, may include their political line-up of Negros Occidental for the 2013 elections.
“We will also exert efforts to prevent the break-up of UNA,” he added.
Whatever comes up and is decided in the meeting, hopefully, everybody will abide by it, Alvarez also said.
Zayco, who is also attending the meeting, said the plan is to iron out problems within the party. However, there are reports that the meeting aims to select its candidate for the gubernatorial post of Negros Occidental.
Marañon, who had announced earlier that he will seek re-election as governor, said he has no idea if there will be a selection of a candidate for the gubernatorial post. He, however, said that he is hopeful that problems will be threshed out during the meeting in Metro Manila.
Alvarez had earlier announced that he had already been chosen as the gubernatorial bet of NPC in the 2013 elections.
Marañon said the UNA executive committee, which he chairs, will convene on the second week of September, to be attended by all UNA members, including the councilors, to discuss plans for the 2013 elections.
Zayco doused speculations that he may run for governor if the position is offered to him. “I have already decided to run for mayor (of Kabankalan),” he said.*GPB back
