The Department of Labor and Employment in Negros Occidental has released P2,457,890 in grants to eight beneficiary groups this year to help them put up businesses, Ma. Victoria Mondragon, DOLE provincial director, said yesterday.

Mondragon said funds were released under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program that aims to assist small organizations at the barangay level to have their own business to sustain their families.

The recipients are the Multi-sectoral Alliance for Development – Negros, Brgy. Cabacungan, La Castellana; Brgy. Tabao-Rizal, San Enrique; Brgy. Suay, Himamaylan City; Brgy. Tuburan, EB Magalona; Brgy. VI-A, Victorias City; Brgy. Singcang Airport, Bacolod; and the local government unit of San Enrique.

DOE sees savings in
Visayas energy plan

MANILA – The Department of Energy has enlisted 12 other government agencies from the Visayas for the nationwide retrofitting of existing lighting systems with energy efficient alternatives, a government press release said.

The retrofitting program in the Visayas region was sealed following the signing of Memoranda of Agreement yesterday with 12 more participating government agencies, including four city government buildings, seven educational institutions and a state-owned hospital.

This initiative is part of the Philippine Energy Efficiency Project being implemented by the DOE which aims to, among others, improve the lighting systems of government offices and at the same time save on electricity expenditures and help reduce the country’s carbon emissions, the press release said.

Neg. Occ. among areas
for hybrid rice project

MANILA – Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investment Corp. and SL AgriTech Corp. will establish a 1,000-hectare hybrid rice area to help the Philippines achieve self-sufficiency in the P450-billion rice sector.

In a briefing, SL AgriTech Chairman Henry Lim Bon Liong said that they were now identifying initial target areas, through state-run Philippine Agribusiness Development Commercial Corp.

Dr. Frisco Malabanan, SLAC hybrid rice specialist, said that potential areas included Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Zamboanga Sibugay, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley, North Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat.
