SU to award 4 alumni
on 111th anniversary

Four alumni of the Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, will be honored in today's Outstanding Sillimanian awarding rites as highlight of the 111th Founders Day on the theme “Empower Me – Spirit of the Living God”, a press release from the school said.

The awardees are Maria Christina Roble-Esperat for nursing research and administration; lawyer Kathleen Heceta for government service in telecommunications; Enrico Sobong for medicine, and Ambassador Antonio Villamor for diplomacy.

Thousands of alumni are expected to gather at the East Quadrangle for the “Tipon Dumaguete” organized by the Silliman Alumni Association Inc. and the Office of Alumni and External Affairs. The annual celebration hosts all classes holding reunions from elementary, secondary and tertiary levels, the press release also said.

The celebration is a major event in Dumaguete every year, and is said to contribute significantly to the City's tourism industry, generating business for hotels, restaurants and commercial establishments.

Silliman is the Philippines' oldest American university, established as Silliman Institute on August 28, 1901. It was named after Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a philanthropist of Cohoes, New York, who donated the initial amount of $10,000 to establish a school in the country, the press release also said.

The school was founded by American missionaries Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and wife, Laura Cooks, and was granted a university status in 1938.

From an initial student population of 15 boys, SU is presently home to more than 9,000 students, with over 300 of them foreigners from 35 countries, and around 800 faculty and staff, representing about 10 religious affiliations.

There are 262 activities lined up for this month in the 62-hectare campus, starting with the fun run of the SU Law Alumni Association and the College of Law, and the launching of the 111th Silliman Relay, organized by the Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club and the Dumaguete Amateur Runners and Striders, last July 15.

Cultural events have also been conducted since the start of this month, with the much-awaited “Parada Sillimaniana” held yesterday afternoon around the streets of Dumaguete.

Capping the Founders Day celebration is the 50th anniversary of the SU Community Cooperative Inc., one of the country's pioneering credit cooperatives, the press release added.*
